The casual café, in its stripped down form, will be an excellent fit for the mixed-use space that is the proposed 220,000-square-foot culinary and art center at Sebastopol Avenue and Morris Street in a defunct apple processing plant at the west entry to Sebastopol on Hwy. Shimo, meanwhile, which debuted as a high-end steak house in December, has revamped its concept to be more about ramen noodles, and less about beef.Ĭertainly piadine, one of the signatures at the original Rosso in central Santa Rosa, is pretty close to pizza, being flatbread fired in a wood-burning oven and smothered in all kinds of boutique goodies. And later this year, co-owners Kevin Cronin and chef John Franchetti are also planning to open a seafood eatery in Santa Rosa. The extraordinarily popular Rosso is expanding into a new concept, having just signed a lease for a small piadine café within The Barlow on the edge of downtown Sebastopol. ![]() That might be the philosophy for two of the northwest county’s best restaurants, Rosso Pizzeria & Wine Bar in Santa Rosa, and Shimo Modern Steak in Healdsburg. ![]() But if there’s room to make a restaurant even better, then it’s just good business sense to tweak here and there. Musso & Frank is old-school Hollywood charm.If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. One might overhear a newbie diner complaining about the peeling wallpaper or lack of new dishes, but quell the haters by taking in a stirred-only martini. They’re always in a hurry with a goal to make diners feel important while dropping off a glass of pinot noir or baked escargot, crab Louie, filet of sandabs, or a perfectly cooked prime rib. The staff gracefully move throughout the room with intention. There’s something about the pageantry of uniformed waiters and bartenders wearing white or red jackets, but their skill and dedication are why management embroiders the number of years employed on their shirt cuffs. While walking in, take a quick glimpse into the loud kitchen and observe the slightly faded chandeliers, wall light sconces, 1930s art, wood paneling, or even the customers who might be casually dressed or donning a tuxedo before settling into a red leather banquette or the bar. Head to the retro car-filled parking lot before descending into the nearly 104-year-old restaurant.
